Just a short drive from Ramayana Candidasa Beach Resort lies a village that feels like stepping back in time, Tenganan Pegringsingan. This unique destination is one of the Bali Aga villages, which are considered the original Balinese communities that still preserve ancient traditions and lifestyles that predate the influence of the Majapahit Kingdom.
“Bali Aga” literally means “Mountain Bali” or “Original Bali.” The people of these villages live according to a distinct way of life, deeply rooted in ancestral customs. Their social structure is unique, closed, disciplined, and deeply traditional.
Tenganan is one of the few Bali Aga villages open to visitors, yet it has impressively maintained the authenticity of its architecture and customs. Walking through Tenganan is like strolling through a living museum, where tradition is not only preserved but practiced daily.
One of the main attractions of Tenganan is the grinding cloth — a rare handwoven textile made using the intricate double ikat technique. This method is practiced in only three places in the world: India, Japan, and Bali (specifically in Tenganan).
The name gringsing comes from “gring” (sick) and “sing” (no), meaning “no sickness” or a protector against illness and misfortune. The cloth is believed to hold spiritual power and is used in significant ceremonies such as tooth-filing rituals, weddings, and other sacred rites. Creating a single piece can take years and is passed down through generations.
If you’re visiting during June or July, you might be lucky enough to witness Perang Pandan or Mekare-kare, a ceremonial battle held as part of the Usaba Sambah festival. This ritual honors Indra, the Hindu god of war. In this tradition, young men engage in friendly combat using spiky pandan leaves and woven rattan shields. The atmosphere becomes vibrant with the sounds of gamelan, the scent of incense, and the spiritual energy of the entire village in celebration.
